Cognitive (focuses on thoughts, ideas, beliefs) behavioural (looks at harmful or self defeating behaviours) therapy (CBT) is a problem solving therapy in which the therapist helps the client identify the best response to fit a specific problematic situation. CBT works on the belief that thoughts, feelings and behaviours have an effect on each other. It is based on the assumption that if you could change negative thinking patterns, change feelings, which in turn will change negative or self-defeating behaviours. It can change our thoughts, behaviours to improve our emotional state, also help you to understand the connection between actions and feelings. It focuses on current issues and looks ahead to the future, it looks at learnt behaviours, negative and automatic thought patterns with a view of altering them in a positive way. CBT therapy can help with anxiety, phobias, low mood, panic attacks and other mental health disorders.
Person centred therapy is where the psychotherapist will guide you through your journey of self discovery, to help you find answers you are seeking. It sees the client as the expert in their own life, hence why it is focused on the individual not the therapeutic approach applied, it is a nondirective therapy that requires the client to take charge and follow their direction in each session, the therapist supports the therapeutic process to encourage positive change in the client. The goal of person centred therapy is to increase the clients self-awareness and improve their self beliefs to make desired changes.
Psychodynamic therapy is associated with Freud and lying on a couch, however, this is not the case and we do not ask clients to lie on a couch for a session. The Psychotherapist helps with deep rooted difficulties in a clients life such as abuse or trauma and focuses on a number of difficulties originating from the past and present life story. It bases the idea that behaviour and mental well-being are influenced by childhood experiences, that may cause problematic thoughts or feelings that are out with your awareness.
Depression, fear, and anxiety are some of the most common and uncomfortable emotions that we can experience at some point in our lives. Through counselling and support and cbt therapy we are able to help you recover motivation, perspective, and joy that you once had in your life.
Many individuals can experience symptoms associated with painful and traumatic circumstances. Anxiety, fear, and hopelessness are a few emotions that can linger post traumatic events. We can help you overcome these symptoms and guide you through the process of grief and healing.
Grief affects us emotionally, physically and can affect our mental and physical health. Grief is a natural response when you lose something or someone. It can be overwhelming, where there can be all kinds of emotions such as guilt, sadness, anger, shock or you can experience a roller coaster of emotions. Grief counselling can guide you through your bereavement and offer you support when you are finding it hard to cope.
Losing someone close to you to suicide can have a ripple effect to family and friends. It can be painful and emotionally complex. It is not unusual to feel guilty, wishing you had seen the signs or wishing you had done more, these are common reactions. It is important to take care of yourself during this overwhelming and upsetting time.
Firstly, I'd like to say I was never a believer in counselling and always said it would never work for me. I lost my son due to addiction, which led him to take his own life. I blamed myself and couldn't cope. It was suggested I seek counselling. My first session consisted of me crying through the full session and my counsellor just quietly listening to me as I spoke about how I was feeling. She made me think about how I was processing the things in my head and helped me to think rationally and put things into perspective. When I finally left the session, I felt so much better for having verbally voiced all the things running around my head. The experience proved to me that talking does help. You can talk about anything you want. You can sit quiet through your session if that's what you want to do. You can cry or talk about things in general and its all confidential. I was truly amazed by the difference it made to me in the way that I think and process things. So my advice to anyone who thought as I did, give it a go if your struggling. It is good to talk and you maybe surprised at how much it helps.
